It is an honor and a privilege to have my work recognized at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts juried exhibition — and to have “Mindfulness of Tea” find its audience in this way.
Second Place at the CAFA Juried Exhibition
On July 5, 2015, my painting Mindfulness of Tea was awarded second place at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) juried exhibition at the Mystic Museum of Art. Being chosen for this exhibition — and then recognized with an award — is deeply flattering. It affirms the work in a way that is both humbling and energizing.
About the Painting: Mindfulness of Tea
Mindfulness of Tea is a large-scale Bay Area Figurative painting, 36 inches x 48 inches, that explores a quiet, intimate moment. I wanted to create an almost voyeuristic viewpoint — the viewer catching a private glimpse of a woman in her own world, pouring tea. There is no performance in this moment. It is entirely hers.
The Bay Area Figurative style — with its expressive brushwork, rich color, and return to the human figure — felt like the natural language for this subject. The painting is about stillness, presence, and the quiet rituals that define our inner lives. It sits in the tradition of artists like Winslow Homer and the Bay Area Figurativists who found the monumental in the everyday.
